Test-Optional College Admissions
Test optional is a college-specific policy about whether applicants may choose to submit standardized test scores. It is not a universal Common App setting. Check each college's current admissions page and the Testing information in Common App.
Testing policies vary by college
Common App directs students to check the testing policy for colleges on their list. Some colleges require scores, some use test-optional policies, and some may have additional testing or English-proficiency requirements.
Use current institutional instructions
A policy can change by entry term, applicant type, program, or application cycle. The college's admissions website is the best source for the current rule, followed by the requirements shown in Common App.
Do not confuse score reporting with a recommendation
A test-optional policy tells applicants whether scores are required or may be submitted. It does not answer whether a particular student should submit scores. For that decision, use the college's current guidance and discuss individual circumstances with an authorized adviser if needed.
Common questions
Does test optional mean a college does not accept scores?+
Not necessarily. It generally means scores are optional, but the college's current policy explains whether and how scores are considered.
Do transfer applicants have the same testing policy as first-year applicants?+
Not always. Common App's transfer guide directs applicants to check each program's policy.
