How College Application Deadlines Work

A college application deadline belongs to the college and its admission plan. Confirm the date, time, materials, and plan for every college directly in Common App and on the college's admissions website.

Reviewed Evidence: official sources

A deadline is more than a date

A complete plan records the admission plan, deadline, time zone if stated, application fee or waiver process, testing policy, writing requirements, and recommendation timeline. A student should not assume that all colleges use the same plan or deadline.

Common App recognizes several admission-plan types, including regular, rolling, early action, early decision, and restrictive or single-choice early action. Colleges decide which plans they offer.

Separate student tasks from recommender tasks

Submitting a student's own application is different from ensuring that counselors, teachers, testing agencies, and transcript offices have time to complete their work. Request required materials well before the college deadline and check the college's instructions for how they are received.

Use one source of truth per college

A spreadsheet or checklist is useful for planning, but it is not the authority. Update it from the college's current admissions page and the requirements shown in Common App.

Common questions

Do all Common App colleges have the same deadline?+

No. Each college sets its own deadline and admission plans.

Does submitting my part mean the whole application is complete?+

Not always. Colleges may also require materials from recommenders, counselors, testing agencies, or transcript offices. Check the college's application checklist.
