What this picker can decide

It can show where the shape of your story overlaps a prompt. It cannot tell whether the story is specific enough, whether the reflection is earned, or what belongs in your final essay. Those decisions stay with you.

A tie is useful. It means the same material could answer two questions, so you can draft a short plan under each and see which one requires fewer explanations or invented turns.

Use the official wording before you draft

The matches above are plain-language summaries. Read the current wording on the official Common App prompt page before drafting. The source and this tool were reviewed on August 11, 2026 for the 2026-2027 cycle.

Common questions

Which Common App prompt is best?+

No prompt is best in general. The useful choice is the prompt that fits a specific story you can support with scenes, decisions, and reflection without bending what happened.

Can the same story fit more than one Common App prompt?+

Yes. A setback can also spark growth, and an identity story can include a realization. Compare which question your evidence answers most directly instead of searching for one mathematically correct match.

Does choosing Prompt 7 hurt my application?+

Common App presents Prompt 7 as one of the seven choices. Use it when a strong story does not fit the first six cleanly, not as a way to avoid deciding what the essay should add.

Does this tool write or store my essay?+

No. The picker uses four multiple-choice answers in your browser. It does not ask for, generate, upload, or store essay text.
