Common App Recommendation Letters

Recommendation requirements are set by each college or program. Common App lets students invite supporters, but students should check the recommendation tab and admissions website for the required recommender types and number of letters.

Reviewed Evidence: official sources

Requirements are college-specific

Common App explains that many colleges ask for letters of recommendation, while each college chooses its own requirements. A student should not assume a teacher, counselor, or other recommender is required unless the college says so.

Ask early and give accurate information

Once a college's requirements are clear, ask the recommender with enough time to respond. Give them the college name, deadline, and any context they request. The recommender submits their own material through the process the college or Common App provides.

Check every application's status

A student can submit an application while other required materials are pending, depending on the college's process. Check the college's instructions and later application checklist to confirm what has been received.
