Testing policy
For 2026-2027 and later, UNC says applicants with a weighted GPA of 2.8 or higher on a 4.0 scale do not have to submit SAT or ACT scores. Applicants below 2.8 must submit at least an ACT score of 17 or SAT score of 930. UNC publishes a separate rule for schools that do not report a weighted 4.0 GPA. Self-reported scores are used in review, official scores are required from enrolling students who submitted them, and UNC superscores.
AI and authorship policy
No dedicated public policy found. No dedicated public UNC-Chapel Hill undergraduate admissions AI policy was found during Nudge's August 11, 2026 review. UNC says the personal essay should sound like the applicant and publishes general advice about authentic writing and reader feedback.
What remains uncertain
UNC's reviewed admissions pages do not define permitted or prohibited AI uses. Ask UNC Admissions about any planned use beyond ordinary human feedback before submitting.
A detector percentage is not a substitute for this policy. Preserve notes, dated drafts, revision history, and feedback so the development of the student's own work remains visible.
Treat the Common App essay as the main writing sample
With no separate UNC short answer on the current prompt page, the personal statement carries the writing work. Choose a story that adds context, judgment, or perspective instead of repeating the activities list in longer sentences.
Keep activities and essay evidence in different jobs
UNC explicitly invites students to include work, caregiving, clubs, sports, and other responsibilities in activities. Let that section establish role and time. Use the essay only when one experience contains a scene or choice that reveals something the list cannot.
