Personal Statement vs. Supplemental Essays: What Should Change?

The personal statement and supplemental essays should not feel like the same essay in different clothes. They do different jobs.
Your personal statement usually gives the broadest view of how you think, change, or make meaning. Supplements answer a narrower question: why this school, why this major, why this community, why this part of you.
The personal statement needs a durable center
A personal statement should give the reader a way to understand you beyond grades and activities. It does not need to cover your whole life. It needs one strong thread that can hold a full essay.
That thread might be a question you kept returning to, a role you grew into, or a moment that changed how you see yourself.
Supplements need precision
A supplement is not a smaller personal statement. It should answer the prompt directly and with evidence. If a school asks why a major, name the intellectual problem, class, lab, community, or method that actually fits you.
A supplement should make the match feel researched and personal, not pasted from a brochure.
Avoid repeating the same proof
It is fine for applications to have a consistent identity. It is not fine for every essay to use the same scene. Use the personal statement for one central story, then let supplements show other angles.
Before writing, map each prompt to a different piece of evidence: one activity, one question, one relationship, one habit, one academic interest.
