Testing policy
Rice recommends but does not require the SAT or ACT and says applicants without scores receive full consideration. It accepts self-reported results from students at United States high schools, with official scores required for enrolling students who submitted them.
AI and authorship policy
No dedicated public policy found. Nudge did not find a dedicated public first-year admissions AI or authorship policy in Rice's official admissions pages during this review. The absence of a published policy is not permission for a particular use.
What remains uncertain
Ask Rice Admission before using a tool that could supply the essay's structure or language. Do not infer an admissions rule from Rice's academic-integrity or classroom AI materials.
A detector percentage is not a substitute for this policy. Preserve notes, dated drafts, revision history, and feedback so the development of the student's own work remains visible.
Give the two 150-word answers different evidence
Use the academic response for a question, method, or field you want to pursue. Use the Rice-experience response for the environment or opportunity that makes Rice a useful place to pursue it. Repeating the same program name in both gives away scarce space.
Treat the optional response as a real choice
Five hundred words can add substantial context, but optional does not mean mandatory. Write it when one of the prompts reveals experience or perspective the rest of the application does not already carry. Leave it blank when it would only stretch a story told elsewhere.
