Testing policy
Northwestern is test optional for first-year applicants and states no preference between the SAT and ACT. Applicants may self-report scores, while enrolling students who submitted scores must provide official confirmation.
AI and authorship policy
Published admissions guidance found. Northwestern permits constructive AI use for school research, planning, exploring academic goals, brainstorming topics, and reviewing grammar, punctuation, or spelling. It says the applicant's essays must remain original work in the applicant's own voice.
What the published guidance clearly permits
- School research and planning
- Exploring academic goals and brainstorming essay topics
- Grammar, punctuation, and spelling review
What the published guidance prohibits
- Submitting AI-written personal or supplemental essays
- Using AI to translate an essay written in another language
- Turning an outline into submitted AI prose
- Using AI to rework an essay for a different school
What remains uncertain
Northwestern says its guidance may evolve. Recheck the official page before submitting and compare the actual tool action with the examples, not only the product name.
A detector percentage is not a substitute for this policy. Preserve notes, dated drafts, revision history, and feedback so the development of the student's own work remains visible.
Use the required response to show participation
The prompt asks how your background will shape engagement, so connect context to action. Name a habit, responsibility, or perspective and show how it affects what you notice, ask, build, or contribute with other people.
Choose optional prompts for new evidence
You may answer up to two optional questions. Pick the ones that add evidence the required response and personal statement do not already provide. A vivid answer about a campus community is more useful than two optional answers that repeat the same academic goal.

Change notes
- Northwestern's official requirements page labels the supplements for 2026-2027 and the Class of 2031.
- The current dates table lists January 4, 2027 for Regular Decision. A lower accordion contains stale transfer wording, so this guide uses the current top-level table.
