How to Write the Stanford Roommate Essay Without Sounding Fake

A practical way to approach Stanford's roommate essay by using honest details, habits, humor, and voice instead of trying to impress.

The Stanford roommate essay is easy to overthink because it feels casual and high stakes at the same time. Students often try to sound quirky, impressive, or perfectly charming. That is why many drafts feel fake.

The stronger approach is to write like a person your future roommate could actually live near: specific, honest, and aware of your own habits.

Do not turn it into a resume

Your roommate does not need a list of awards. They need a signal of what it feels like to share space with you. A habit, ritual, pet peeve, inside joke, or small confession can do more than another achievement.

If a sentence could also appear in your activities section, it probably does not belong here.

Use details that create texture

Good roommate essays often include details that are too small for the rest of the application: the snack you always have, the playlist you use before exams, the way you label leftovers, or the midnight question you cannot stop asking.

The detail should reveal something real, not just decorate the page.

Let humor come from truth

Forced humor is obvious. Honest specificity is often funnier. "I set three alarms and still negotiate with the third one" works better than trying to perform a joke.

If you are not naturally funny on the page, do not panic. Warmth and specificity are enough.

End with a real invitation

A good ending does not need to be grand. It can invite the roommate into a habit, a question, or a shared future. The goal is not to prove you are interesting. It is to make the reader feel they met you.

Common questions

Should the Stanford roommate essay be funny?+

It can be funny, but it does not have to be. It should feel specific and human, not like a resume in casual clothing.

Can I write about ordinary habits?+

Yes. Ordinary habits can work well when they reveal personality, values, or how you share space with other people.
