2026-2027 application cycle

UC Application Guide: Berkeley, UCLA, PIQs, Deadlines, and Requirements (2026-2027)

UC Berkeley, UCLA, and the other UC campuses use one University of California application. First-year applicants choose four of eight Personal Insight Questions, with a 350-word maximum for each. The Fall 2027 filing period runs from October 1 through November 30, 2026. UC does not consider SAT or ACT scores for admission or scholarships, and its PIQ guidance requires the responses to reflect the applicant's own ideas and writing.

Deadlines and decision plans

Application opens: August 1, 2026

Applicants can start the shared UC application before the filing window.

Fall 2027 filing period: October 1 to November 30, 2026

UC uses one filing period rather than Early Decision, Early Action, and Regular Decision plans.

Campus decisions: March 1 to March 31, 2027

Each campus evaluates the application independently, and some decisions may arrive earlier.

Statement of Intent to Register: May 1, 2027

The official calendar lists this as the first-year response deadline.

Testing policy

UC does not consider SAT or ACT scores when making admission decisions or awarding scholarships. UC says scores may still be used as an alternate way to meet minimum eligibility or for course placement after enrollment. English-proficiency requirements are separate and can apply based on the applicant's schooling and language background.

AI and authorship policy

No dedicated public policy found. No dedicated public Berkeley or UCLA undergraduate admissions AI policy was found during Nudge's August 11, 2026 review. UC's PIQ guidance says the responses must reflect the applicant's own ideas and be written by the applicant, while allowing feedback from other people.

What the published guidance clearly permits

  • Feedback that leaves the ideas and writing with the applicant

What the published guidance prohibits

  • Plagiarism or submitting another person's words as the applicant's PIQ response

What remains uncertain

The reviewed UC page does not give a tool-by-tool AI rule. Ask the relevant campus about a planned AI use that goes beyond feedback on student-written work.

A detector percentage is not a substitute for this policy. Preserve notes, dated drafts, revision history, and feedback so the development of the student's own work remains visible.

Treat four PIQs as one application set

Choose for coverage. Four responses about the same activity, trait, or lesson leave most of the application unexplored. Assign each answer a different setting, responsibility, relationship, or kind of thinking before drafting.

Do not invent a campus-specific essay

The current shared application does not list a general Berkeley or UCLA supplement. Research campus and program requirements for accuracy, but do not force a Why Berkeley or Why UCLA response into a PIQ that asks a different question.

The official 2026-27 calendar lists a filing period from October 1 through November 30, 2026.

Does UC consider SAT or ACT scores?+

UC does not consider SAT or ACT scores for admission decisions or scholarships. Scores can still have limited uses for eligibility or placement.

Change notes

  • The official UC calendar explicitly labels these dates for 2026-2027 and Fall 2027.
  • UC's public first-year materials list the shared four-of-eight PIQ requirement and no general Berkeley-specific or UCLA-specific supplemental essay. Applicants to a special program, portfolio, or major should verify any additional requirement in the live application.
  • This single guide owns the shared UC application intent so Nudge does not publish interchangeable Berkeley and UCLA pages with identical facts.
